Alnwick novice fighters triumph in first contest

STUDENTS from Alnwick's DFM Kickboxing School showed they are a force to be reckoned with after fighting in their first competition.

Six students travelled to Newcastle to take part in a contest with kickboxing students from the Advanced Fighting Centre (AFC).

Novice fighters, and up against experienced kickboxers, three DFM students won their bouts and the others were closely-fought contests.

Held at AFC’s gym, Newcastle, the contestants fought for three minutes over three rounds in a continuous bout.

The fighters were Lisa Williams, Mike Makin, Nichola Allen, Steve McLoughlin, Karen Millward and John Winters.

DFM instructor Darren Currah said: “All six students showed great spirit and determination against more experienced competitors. The competition was held to allow our fighters to gain valuable experience before entering national competitions.

“Although three of our fighters won their bouts, everyone was a winner because it was about testing courage and techniques. None of our students let the side down.

“Later on in the year we will be inviting the AFC club up to Alnwick for a return match.

“We would like to thank Sensei John Atkins of the AFC for organising the match.”

DFM Kickboxing club meets every Wednesday at the Willowburn Leisure Centre from 7pm.

Advanced martial arts classes are also available at St Michael’s Hall, Cannongate, Alnwick, on Fridays from 7.15pm.

The club is a member of the Amateur Martial Association, affiliated to EKGB, World Association of Kickboxing Associations and WAKO.
