Laura Weightman admitted she was tired and totally drained after a 14th-place finish in the Stockholm fixture of the Diamond League last night.
The 23-year-old’s recent medal heroics, winning Commonwealth Games silver and European Championships bronze within a matter of weeks, clearly took their toll on the Lesbury athlete, who was way off the pace in Sweden.
In what was her first race since last Friday’s fine podium-placed finish in Switzerland, the Morpeth Harrier came last in 4:14.92, with Jennifer Simpson, of the USA, winning in 4:00.38.
Laura Muir, of Scotland, put her early European Championships exit behind her with a strong display, coming sixth in 4:04.71.
After the race, Weightman wrote on her Facebook page: “It was a tired Laura in Stockholm. Good job I saved my worst race of the season for after the championships when it really matters!! Totally drained, but it’s been a busy month of racing.”
Current British champion Weightman is due to be back on the track next Thursday, at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich.
The race will take place in the Letzigrund Stadium, the same venue where Weightman won her bronze medal at the European Championships earlier this month.
