Laura Weightman returned from warm-weather training in Kenya to clock the fastest women’s time in the North Eastern Counties Road Relay Championships, at Hetton-Le-Hole on Saturday.

The Morpeth Harrier, from Lesbury, finished the two-lap 2.22-mile circuit in 11min 36sec, ahead of Birtley’s Lydia Turner, who produced a time of 12m05s.

Weightman helped the Harriers’ Senior Women finish eighth behind a very strong Birtley squad, who retained their title.

She certainly looked sharp and the Morpeth squad was boosted by the appearance of the international runner, who took them up to third place on the second leg.

Supporting Laura in the Morpeth effort were U17 athlete Abby Sheldon (15m01s) and U20 athletes Amber Cormack (15m00s) and Charlotte Jewell (14m54s). Morpeth’s Senior Men won their event.
