An Amble schoolboy, who was representing Northumberland at the annual Northern Inter Counties Schools Cross-Country Championships last Saturday, was first home for the county in his age category.

Kieran Hedley, a Morpeth Harrier from James Calvert Spence College, came seventh overall in the Junior Boys’ race at Meadowfield Leisure Centre, near Durham.

The competition, which saw entrants from Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland, North Yorkshire and Cumbria taking part, served also as a final hurdle for those wishing to gain qualification in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior age groups for the English Schools Championships, scheduled to be held at Castle Donnington in Leicestershire on Saturday, March 15.

After this performance, Kieran should qualify.
