Kids urged to sign up for new triathlon

YOUNGSTERS are being encouraged to enter the Alnwick Kids Triathlon.

The Sunday, July 8, event will be based at the town’s Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre and is open to children of all abilities aged up to 14 years old.

Prizes will be up for grabs for the first, second and third boy and girl in each of the following categories – TriStar 1 (nine–10 years old), TriStar 2 (11–12 years old) and TriStar 3 (13–14 years old).

There will also be a Jelly Tots participation event for under eights, where parents are responsible for children completing the course. Both the Jelly Tots and the TriStar Start (for those aged eight) are non-competitive.

Each age group will tackle a swim, bike and a run of varying distances. Competitors who complete the course will receive a goody bag. Entry for the Jelly Tots event is £5 while entry for all other events are £7 for British Triathlon Federation members and £8 non-members.

As part of the build up to the triathlon, a taster session will be held this Sunday at Willowburn from 4.30pm to 5.30pm for those aged eight to 14.

Children will need to bring their own bike, cycling helmet and running shoes.

The session costs £1 per child and participants should meet at the sport centre’s entrance.
