WINNER: Duchess’s High Boys & Girls Cross Country Teams – Athletics

LOCAL sporting stars and volunteers were honoured at the Alnwick and District Sports Council Annual Awards Night.

The prestigious ceremony took place at Alnwick Playhouse on Saturday evening.

Alnwick’s Duchess’s Community High School’s Intermediate Boys and Girls Cross Country teams were winners of the Junior Team award.

The boys and girls teams won the Northumberland round of the English Schools’ Cross Country Cup.

They both followed that up by winning the North East regional round at Guisborough which qualified them for the National Finals for the first time in the competition’s history.

The finals were due to be held in Alnwick in December last year but were cancelled due to the severe winter weather, and will now take place in the town’s Pastures on March 26 2011.

Connor Weightman, 15, from the boys team, said both sides were relishing the prospect of competing in the finals on home soil.
