Plans to open a boxing club in Wooler are taking shape and an open evening is being held on Tuesday.
The community-minded group, which will also feature fitness classes, is the brainchild of David Milburn, who previously coached at Hadston.
The club is set to be based at the village’s Glendale Middle School and the sports hall is due for an Amateur Boxing Association inspection this weekend.
Experienced coach David, who is the Wooler club’s secretary, is encouraging anyone who is interested to attend Tuesday’s session.
He said: “I have been a boxing coach for several years and I really do feel that there is a need for a club in the area.
“Glendale Middle School wants its sports hall to be used more for the community, so we are going to set up in there.
“We are holding the open session next week and we will be trying to gauge interest about how many people want to join.
“We will have some equipment set up so people can see it and there will be a couple of boxers going through a couple of techniques. People will be able to take membership out there and then.”
As well as boxing, the club will also hold boxercise sessions, courtesy of Active Northumberland.
David added: “This is a community-minded club and we are wanting to cover all aspects of the community and cater for all.”
David has been buoyed by the interest shown in the club so far.
Last summer, a meeting which was held to gauge public opinion about the it proved successful.
He says the organisation already has a committee, which includes local PC Andy Clark as its chairman, and adds that there has been a lot of community support.
He told the Gazette that Alnwick Amateur Boxing Club has been supportive and he would like to work in conjunction with local clubs.
The open evening will take place at Glendale Community Middle School from 6pm to 8pm. For more information, call David on 07900 981713.
