Invincible Alnwick Colts have been crowned league champions with two matches to spare.

In what has been an incredible campaign, the Greensfield youngsters have not lost a game all season.

And the impressive side wrapped up the Northumberland and Durham U18 Saturday League title on Saturday with a fine 30-14 win over Billingham.

The Colts ran in four tries against their County Durham opponents to help start the championship celebrations.

Clinical Ben Foy took his season’s try tally to 27 with two touchdowns in the Billingham bashing. Ben Courty and Nick Clarkson scored one apiece.

The win extended the Colts’ unbeaten run this season to 16 matches in all competitions. And they are aiming to complete a league and cup double when they take on rivals Morpeth in the County Cup Final later this month.

Before that, they face fixtures against Westoe (April 12) and Percy Park (April 19).

The Colts’ achievements are all the more impressive considering they almost folded before the campaign.

Captain Joe Phillips said: “At the start of the season our aim was simply to get a squad together, but as numbers increased and with the rugby we were producing, we started to have an eye on winning the league.

“The commitment from the players and coaches has been the key to our success this season and our aim is to finish the season unbeaten and be the first Colts team to win the league and cup double for at least 30 years.”
