In the medals

BROTHERS Oliver and Benji Gillingham competed in the third round of the Gateshead Minor Athletes Meets at Gateshead International Stadium on Sunday.

Benji, competing in the U9s, threw an excellent 24m30cm in the Howler to win a silver medal. He was fourth in the SLJ with a leap of 1m 56cm, fourth in his heat of the 50m sprint in 10.00s and finished seventh in the 400m.

Oliver, competing in the U11s, improved upon the Alnwick Harriers club record he set in an earlier meet for the 75m sprint in a time of 12.5s. He was fifth in the Howler with a throw of 22.85m. He had another excellent run in the 600m, recording a time of 2m10s, which was just outside his personal best and achieved a pb in the long jump with a leap of 3.28m.

The next minor athletes meet at Gateshead Stadium is on Sunday, July 10. This competition is open to all school children in Years 3 through to 6.
