ALNWICK Harriers have won promotion to Division One of the North East Harrier League.
A fantastic performance from the men’s team in the final fixture of the Division Two campaign at the weekend saw the Harriers achieve the feat, after just one season in the second tier.
The Harriers were third in the table before Saturday’s all-important race in Prudhoe.
But an impressive showing saw them finish first on the day, propelling them into second spot in the league to clinch promotion.
Sunderland Strollers won Division Two.
It was a top effort from the Alnwick lads, considering the Prudhoe course is generally considered the most demanding cross country of the season.
First male home for Alnwick was Graham Syers in 34min 24sec, finishing 11th overall, while Mike Telfer completed the run only six seconds behind. Both will be in the medium pack for next season.
Third and fourth were Adam Spiller in 33rd position overall and a time of 35:12 and Jim Lillico in 35:46, 47th overall.
Other point-scorers were Mark Miller in 35:46 and Dave Hindmarsh in 39:05.
The ladies fielded a team of three for the final event and finished in a respectable league position of 11th overall out of almost 30 clubs – a good achievement after a difficult season.
Keen cross country runner Mary Plumley came home first for the club, completing her distance in a great time of 26:28, closely followed by the ever-present Tracey Sample with a two-minute handicap in 26:36.
Tracey also achieved 13th position in the Overall Grand Prix tables for the season and was the only Alnwick Harrier to make it into the Grand Prix standing this year.
Third home was Mel Steer, representing her club in her first cross country run of the season and impressing her team-mates in a good time of 28:50.
