A BELFORD girl has qualified to represent Northumberland at next month’s Inter-County Cross Country Championships.

And she will be joined on the county’s team by seven representatives of Alnwick Junior Harriers.

St Mary’s Middle School pupil Sophie Robinson qualified for the championships, which will take place in Kirby Stephen, Cumbria, on Saturday, February 4, by negotiating the area competition, at Longridge Towers, and then the inter-area competition held at Temple Park, South Shields, where she finished in the top 10.

The school congratulated Sophie, who does all her running at school, on her ‘fantastic achievement’ and paid tribute to volunteers Eric and Margaret Sim, who have led a running club at the school for many years.

Alnwick Junior Harriers were also in strong force representing their respective schools at the recent Northumberland Schools Cross Country Championships on a cold but sunny day at Temple Park last week, and seven Harriers qualified to represent the county next month.

Qualifying for the Minor Boys (2,600m): Ben Kelly. Junior Boys (4,000m): Adam Weightman. Inter-Boys (5,300m): Daniel Leng and Joe Mallen, Junior Girls (3,000m): Rosie Murton. Inter-Girls (4,000m): Suzie Munro-Barwise and Molly Murton.
