Mixed Foursomes CL Ross Trophy - Very much a family affair with fathers & daughters featuring strongly in this year’s competition, again the dreaded count back was required to split 1st & 2nd places. The winners were declared as Darryl & Olivia Taylor (36 points); 2nd Steve & Megan Forman (36); 3rd husband & wife George & Jen Forman (34).

Seniors - Entries for our Tuesday Roll Up dropped to ten this week as freezing conditions made for difficult scoring. Very average points totals of 14 gave a share of third place to David Gleadall and Bob Hill with John Turnbull faring slightly better to be runner-up with 15. However, the winner was a very consistent Geoff Smart with a fine score of 19 points.

The Summer Order of Merit is now up and running and after two events some early season form is evident with only three points separating the top five players. Tom Harris occupies fifth spot on 14 points, George Forman and Geoff Smart are joint third with 15 and Steve Lockley is second on 16. However, ‘quietly’ slipping into the lead on 17 points is Bob Stephenson.

Thursday saw our annual friendly match away to neighbours Foxton GC when we unfortunately came off second best as a fine performance from our hosts saw them run out comfortable winners. The remainder of the non team players competed in a nine hole stableford when there was a four way tie between Geoff Smart, Mike Alexander, Peter Egdell and Dave Bayliss for second place on 18 points. The winner on 19 was Bob Hill.

Captain’s texas Scramble - On Saturday members played in the annual Captain’s Texas Scramble. It was no surprise when the club’s specialist Texas Scramble team, comprising Garry Henderson and the three Gray’s took the first place with a gross 12 under par score of 58, meaning they would have almost won even before subtraction of their team handicap!

1st Dave Gray, Garry Henderson, Paul Gray, Ian Gray 58-3.2=54.8, 2nd Ross Young, Wayne Gair, Roy Wilson, Freddie Bremner 61-3.8=57.2, 3rd Nev Holden, Ken Bailey, Michael Lucas, Dave Coates 63-4.5=58.5.

The Captain’s nearest the pin on the sixth was won by Garry Henderson (out in the last group and the only player all day who managed to hit the green off the tee!)

Teeing up for charity

Golfers from across the region are set to tee off to help a vital cancer support charity.

Dawson & Sanderson’s charity golf day will take place at Longhirst Hall Golf Course in Northumberland on Friday, May 12, with the aim of raising almost £8000 for Daft As A Brush.

The Newcastle-based travel agency has been fundraising all year to support Daft As A Brush’s free transport service for patients across the north of England.

Dozens of golfers have already signed up for the tournament, which takes a shotgun format with teams competing across Longhirst’s championship standard Dawson course.

Longhirst Hall’s director of golf Graham Chambers said: “It will be a fantastic day, with lots of teams already registered representing companies across the North East. We’re hoping to get some of the Newcastle United players along as well and have some signed footballs and shirts for the auction and raffle.

“It’s an amazing cause to support and hopefully the golf day will help Dawson & Sanderson smash its £20,000 fundraising target for Daft As A Brush.”

There are limited places left for those wanting to register for the golf day, at a cost of £180 for a team of four, which includes breakfast, warm up balls on the range, the tournament and a hog roast at the end of play. The tournament will be followed by an auction and raffle with some superb prizes including holidays and travel vouchers donated by Dawson & Sanderson.
