The annual Sean Simpson Memorial Trophy was contested between teams of boys and girls from Belford First School and Wooler First School, resulting in Wooler retaining the trophy with an away win.

The tournament was run last week on a Champions League format between boys’ teams and separately for girls, with the Wooler girls eventually breaking the deadlock to secure the trophy. The football tournament rotates between both first-school venues on an annual basis.

The event is held in memory of talented local football coach Sean Simpson, who died unexpectedly nine years ago.

“The tournament helps bring local children together from both schools in a positive and engaging atmosphere,” said Trident Soccer director Ryan Jobson, whose coaching team administrated the event.

“The annual tournament is a fitting and positive way to remember Sean and celebrate his work with children at both schools. It’s a fun-packed day for everyone involved and I would like to thank and congratulate all the children and staff involved, and also thank FA referee Richard Kelly for officiating at the event.”
