Vipers grab last-gasp goal

Alnwick Vipers U10 1 Rothbury Rvrs U10 0

U10 Premiership Cup

A goal right at the end of a gripping Glendale League Cup match cost Rothbury Rovers a place in the U10 Premiership Cup final.

Despite pressing for large periods of the game, Alnwick looked to have been frustrated by an impressive Rothbury defence.

As early as the second minute of the match Niall Murtagh, the Rothbury goalie, was forced to pull off an excellent reaction save from a smart shot from the Alnwick forward, but as the half progressed, Rothbury gained a level of control in the game.

The second half started the same way as the first, Alnwick swarming over a stretched Rothbury defence.

Yet Alnwick’s dominance of territory almost became their undoing as Rothbury constructed the game’s clearest goal-scoring opportunity.

The game seemed to have moved towards a stalemate, but appearances were going to prove deceptive as the game was moving to a dramatic final act.

With less than a minute left on the clock, both teams packed the Rothbury box for a corner, which saw the ball eventually find the back of the net.
