Morpeth Sunday League

In spite of the abdication of several clubs to the Blyth and Wansbeck Sunday League during the summer and the resignation of one club on the day of the pre-season meeting, the Morpeth Sunday League kicked off its season on Sunday.

Unfortunately, even at this stage of the season, Alnmouth Argyle advised that they were unable to field a team in their scheduled fixture against Shambles.

Needless to say, this is not an ideal start to the season and Alnmouth have given assurances that this was a ‘minor blip’.

The matches that did take place saw a very hard-fought game played between Amble Tavern and Northumberland Athletic, which saw the teams level 1-1 at half-time. The Tavern, last year’s champions, were eventual victors, with goals from Ross Gair (two) and Brad McClelland. The scorer for Northumberland Athletic was Scott Willis.

Sadly, this match also saw the first major casualty of the season with Rikki Hume suffering a broken ankle, which will see him sidelined for quite some time.

Thanks to all who helped at the match and I am sure that we all wish Rikki a speedy and successful recovery.

Stobswood lost at home to The Wharton by three goals to one. Mark Sinclair scored for Stobswood, but The Wharton replied with strikes from Josh Munachan (two) and Chris Dobey.

The two new clubs in the league suffered the same fate with Wansbeck Morpeth losing to Amble Blue Bell, whose scorers were Peter Murray (four), Joe Henderson, Ross Straughan and James Oliver.

The game between Bedlington FC and Ashington RAOB ended in a big win for the RAOB. Their goals were scored by Damon Mullen (four), Jamie Thompson (four), Mark Race (three), Kris Willis and Liam Davidson.

The league will be holding an extraordinary general meeting on Monday, September 8, to clarify the resignation of Bedlington Barrington and to discuss their application to rejoin the league. All clubs must be represented.
