Trophy in memory of tragic footy pals

A special football tournament, held in honour of two soccer-mad Hadston teenagers who died suddenly, kicks off on Sunday.

The annual Hacka and Shanka Memorial Trophy was launched in 2009 in honour of grass-roots footballers and close pals Paul Mavin, 18, and 19-year-old Liam Shanks, who lost their lives within two months of each other earlier that year.

The teams taking part this year are Pegswood Ex, Red Row Brick Club, Amble Dock Hotel, Stobswood Welfare, North End Trap Broomhill, East Chevington, Blackthorn Rovers and Amble Pier 81.

The teams will be divided into two groups of four, and the winners of each group will contest the July 22 final at Stobswood Welfare.
