ALNWICK Town have been denied the Northern Alliance Premier Division title, on a dramatic final afternoon of the season.
The St James’ Park side fell to a 2-1 home defeat to Heaton Stannington while Ponteland United picked up a vital victory, beating Blyth Town 3-2.
It saw Ponteland United leapfrog Alnwick and snatch the title by a point.
In what was a dramatic finale to the 2010/11 season, Town trailed 2-0 before pulling a goal back.
Meanwhile, United, had been 2-1 down at half-time – a result which would have handed the title to Alnwick – before two second half goals, with the all-important winner coming inside the final 10 minutes, to grab three points and the title.
Even a 2-2 result at Ponteland would have been enough for Alnwick to win the championship.
