Alnwick Town boss Paul Yeadon admitted it was a big relief after his side moved off the bottom of the table, but insisted there is still a lot of work to be done to avoid the drop.
The black ‘n’ whites romped to an important 5-1 victory over relegation rivals Esh Winning on Saturday, to move to within six points of safety.
A brace from Daniel Thompson and goals from Tony Brown, Gary Patterson and Ben Keenan secured Town’s first win of 2013, and saw them leapfrog Horden CW at the foot of Northern League Division Two.
Town now have lowly Esh Winning and Brandon United in their sights, but Yeadon is keen to keep everyone’s feet on the ground.
“It was a relief to move off the bottom and beating teams like Esh Winning is how we will stay in this league. It has brought us back into contention,” he said.
“I believe we can get out of this but we won’t get carried away, there is a lot of work to do and we have got some tough games coming up.”
Yeadon was delighted with his team’s display, in what was Town’s first game since the start of January.
“Esh Winning couldn’t cope with us. The lads were committed and full of fight and it didn’t look like we were a team down at the bottom,” he said.
Town opened the scoring after five minutes; Tom Vickers finding Thompson who coolly chipped the keeper.
The hosts extended their lead just before the half-hour thanks to a Brown goal.
Yeadon’s Town troops made it 3-0 in the 54th minute, as Thompson forced the ball home, following some good work by Dale Kennedy.
Winning pushed three up-front in a bid to salvage something from the game and got their reward in the 70th minute when Darren Kokes scored from 10 yards.
But it proved no more than a consolation. Ten minutes from time, Town re-established their three-goal lead when substitute Patterson scored with his first touch of the ball.
A good day’s work was completed in the 85th minute when Keenan broke free of the Winning defence, swerved past the keeper and ran the ball into an empty net.
Town are at Darlington RA on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
