Lowick Leopards 1 Rothbury Rovers 3
Glendale League, Under 10 Division
Guy Fawkes night came two months early for Rothbury Under 10s on Saturday in the Glendale League as two rocket-like shots gained victory for the Rovers over Lowick Leopards.
Rothbury opened the scoring thanks to a screamer from Thorsten Robinson.
An impressive finish saw him collect the ball on the halfway line and, with one glance, he unleashed a fulsome shot at the Lowick goal. Such was the nature of the strike that everyone could see where it was going yet no-one could do anything to stop it and the ball flew into the goal just millimetres below the bar.
Gareth Rickaby put Rothbury two-up.
He then grabbed his second of the game in fine fashion – unleashing a fierce free-kick into the top right-hand corner.
Rothbury continued to go forward and look for more goals but they came up against a Lowick keeper who was playing at the top of his form, including making a double save – the first a stop from point-blank range before an even more outrageous save.
Lowick did manage a goal. The ball broke wide before a sharp shot was deflected into the Rothbury net.
It gave Lowick confidence and they pushed forward. Rothbury keeper, Niall Murtagh, who for so long had been a spectator in the game, pulled off a decent one-on-one save.
Robinson nearly scored his second for Rothbury but his shot hit the cross-bar.
Rothbury Rovers secured their second victory of the season but huge credit to the battling qualities of Lowick and the excellent play of their goalkeeper.
The two Rothbury screamers proved the difference between the two teams.
