Rangers secure their first cup victory

Shilbottle U10 2 Rothbury Rangers U10 4

U10 Championship Cup

A Sam Burdis hat-trick secured Rothbury Rangers’ third win of the season and their first of the Glendale Championship Cup campaign.

Rothbury’s first came from an excellent Elliot Fox cross early in the first half.

The ball fell beautifully for Burdis, whose clean strike sent the ball soaring into the Shilbottle net.

Rothbury pressed for their second goal and Samuel Ewen’s terrier-like play in midfield was instrumental in this goal arriving. His harrying of Shilbottle players saw the ball break to Sam Burdis in the Shilbottle box and the Rothbury striker slid the ball home.

The second half saw Sid Kemp in commanding form at heart of the Rangers defence.

Buoyed by a strong defence, Rothbury pressed for a third and it came via a strong run down the wing by Adam Barnes. His sweeping cross was unluckily turned home by a Shilbottle defender.

Rothbury Rangers had to weather a spell of concerted Shilbottle pressure. Twice Roan Stripp, the Rangers keeper, had to make excellent saves, yet eventually Shilbottle’s pressure turned to goals.

Rothbury looked to preserve their lead and they were helped in this by excellent defensive work from Owen Skipsey.

As Shilbottle looked to add a second, the fresh legs of Carl Darby and Stevie Darby combined to put Sam Burdis in the clear behind the Shilbottle back line.

Once again he rounded the Shilbottle keeper to score and, despite a second consolation goal from Shilbottle, it was Rothbury who had captured the points.
