Lewis Fairbairn was the hat-trick hero as he helped inspire Longhoughton Rangers to a fine win over Blyth Town Cosmos.

The victory ensured the north Northumberland side extended their unbeaten league run, and ended their opponent’s undefeated streak in the process.

Longhoughton took the lead. Thorsten Robinson intercepted a stray pass and fed Ben Lawton who drove forward and dinked a through-ball to Fairbairn who raced onto the pass and rifled a right-foot shot into the net off the inside of the post.

Robinson was involved in Rangers’ second when he chipped the ball over the defence and Fairbairn latched onto it and slid the ball past the keeper for number two .

Cosmos pulled one back when their midfielder stroked in from the edge of the area.

Rangers went 3-1 up thanks to Lawton. The youngster smashed in a rebound from the edge of the box after the Cosmos keeper punched clear from Fairbairn.

It became 4-1 courtesy of a bit of Fairbairn brilliance. He pounced on a loose ball in his own half and set off up the right flank racing away from two Cosmos midfielders, before cutting inside, beating the last man and keeping his composure to net his third.

Cosmos pulled a goal back in the second half, capitalising on a defensive mix-up.

Rangers scored their fifth when Kristian Atkinson converted from the spot after being brought down in the area, having latched onto a Joseph Cormack pass.

Rangers are now the league’s only undefeated side.
