North East Regional Women’s Football League

Lowick United played their first NERWFL fixture, welcoming Durham City to New Barber Park following promotion from the Northumberland County League.

The game kicked off in glorious summer sunshine with everyone eager to test themselves against new higher level opposition. Both teams looked to play the ball on the floor, with some great passing moves in the opening minutes.

Durham City took the lead in the second minute with a superb 30-yard drive from the centre midfielder curling into the corner of the net (0-1).

This seemed to wake up Lowick and they hit back almost immediately with Robyn Stewart sliding in to finish a great passing move involving Tang, Darcy and Michelle Stewart (1-1). Lowick then pressed all over the pitch and a pin-point pass after 22 minutes from Darcy set M Stewart free to beat the keeper with a drive into the corner of the net (2-1).

In the 30th minute, M Stewart scored her second, running and turning the Durham City back four (3-1).

After the break, the heat began to tell, the game slowed and Lowick looked to conserve their energy by keeping possession of the ball. Patterson and captain Tang began to dominate the midfield and took full control with a fourth goal with a superb 25-yard drive that had the keeper grasping as it curled over her head (4-1).

Frame replaced Darcy before Jodie Robinson got her first of the season with an assured drive, beating the keeper to her left (5-1).

Two more changes saw Cass and Rowan replace R Stewart and J Robinson for the final 20 minutes. The freshness added some pace and B Robinson, who moved from left-back to the wing in the reshuffle, broke away to score an excellent sixth with a low shot (6-1).

M Stewart was then able to claim her hat-trick goal with a sharp finish with 10 minutes remaining, final score 7-1.

Lowick United’s first home game was sponsored by Bashers Cabs and they travel to Middlesbrough next week looking to build on this fine start with an away fixture against the strong California Ladies FC.
