Poor start costs Town lads

Ponteland United U11...4 Alnwick Town U11...2

Pin Point Recruitment Junior Football League, U11 League Two

ALNWICK Town won the last 51 minutes of this game 2-1.

Unfortunately, the three goals they shipped in the first nine minutes cost them the points.

Like the home fixture against Ponteland, the match was played in a gale-force wind, which Ponteland had at their backs for the first half.

They used it to pepper Jay Graham’s goal with shots from the off, and scored on four minutes with a curling shot from the left-hand edge of the penalty area.

Two minutes later, the Alnwick defence fell asleep allowing Ponteland to cross from the left and an onrushing midfielder to stroke the ball home from inside the penalty box.

And with only nine minutes on the clock, a now-rattled Alnwick side came off second best in a goalmouth scramble, leaving Ponteland 3-0 up with the game barely started.

The first half ended with a flurry of activity at both ends.

First, Jay Graham, the Alnwick goalie, pulled off an excellent save and then Brandon McCann played a great ball into the Ponteland box that met the head of a Ponteland defender.

The Ponteland goalie parried the shot athletically and Joe Threlfall then rolled the loose ball right along the Ponteland goal-line.

With the wind now at their backs, Alnwick hit back immediately at the start of the second half, substitute Liam Cravagan feeding Joe Pickard, who scored with a low shot.

Ponteland capitalised on this let-off moments later when a series of mistakes in midfield and defence, resulted in two Ponteland forwards getting clear of Alnwick’s defence and beating Jay Graham to make it 4-1.

Brandon McCann reduced the deficit to two goals again moments later when a glorious long ball from Threlfall fell beyond the last Ponteland defenders and at the feet of McCann who delicately rolled the ball into the net.

But Alnwick were left to ponder what might have been.
