More extra-time drama

Tweedmouth Rangers...2 Alnmouth Utd...5 (aet)

North Northumberland League, Runciman Cup – Semi-Final

FOR the third time in a month, Alnmouth overcame cup opponents in extra-time after tying two each at the end of normal time.

The reward for this result is a cup final place against new division champions, Wooler.

Playing at the cramped Billendean ground, David Forbes had already hit a post with a 20 yard drive before a misunderstanding at the back presented Peter McAskill with the easiest of chances to put the hosts ahead on 13 minutes, stroking home from the edge of the area into an empty net. At the other end, meanwhile, the visitors had also created openings, with principally Darren Smith threatening, while Mark Oman’s thunderous 30-yard free-kick was somehow tipped over the angle by John Patterson.

The industrious Russell Stalker had more success, just before the break with a glancing header, connecting with Oman’s centre.

Now in the ascendancy, the visitors forged ahead 10 minutes into the second period when a penalty was awarded for a trip on Stalker. Oman found the net from the spot, however, encroachment resulted in a re-take but with the same result.

Forced to commit forward, Rangers’ pressure paid off 10 minutes from time when Steve Eamons applied the final touch to David Brown’s corner.

Extra-time saw United again making the running and a string of close calls ended just before the turnaround when Stalker chipped into the top corner from 20 yards after Sean Anderson and Smith had been denied by post and keeper.

Immediately from the second period kick-off, the lead was doubled as Smith laid off to Oman, whose perfect, deep through-ball picked out the breaking Anderson, who, in turn, fired first time past Patterson. Any lingering doubts about the outcome were extinguished five minutes later when Alnmouth scored their fifth as a Smith corner was headed home by John Wilkie.

Alnmouth: L Roper, S McEwan, J Wilkie, M Straker, S Smith (C Rutherford), S Anderson, K Taylor (S Carey), R Stalker, M Oman, D Smith, S Oman (L Conroy).
