Alnmouth Utd 2 Highfields Utd 0
Sportsworld North Northumberland League, Division One
Alnmouth United got back on track with three points to stretch their lead at the top.
But although they camped in the visitors’ half for much of the match, this was no stroll against bottom side Highfields who, while never a real threat in attack, defended stubbornly throughout.
Central midfielder Brett Rogerson twice almost broke the deadlock, shooting from range in the opening period, once firing just wide and once forcing a fine save from young keeper James Thompson before Alnmouth eventually gained the advantage when a Peter Murray cross was diverted into his own net by the unfortunate Lewis Rutherford.
After the interval, Liam Jefferson failed to fully exploit a break on goal with a covering defender intercepting but he soon made amends to double the lead, finding the roof of the net 10 yards out following an Andy Murray centre.
The anticipated home onslaught didn’t materialise however as the Berwick side stayed firm with only a Reece Wright free-kick grazing a post going close to adding to the tally.
Alnmouth United are home again this week, facing Bamburgh in a Bilclough Cup quarter final.
