Luckless Cobras in penalty exit

Alnwick Town Cobras U9...2 Wideopen Comets U9...2

(Wideopen win on penalties)

U9 Divisional Cup, Semi-final

COBRAS entertained Wideopen Comets, who are top of the KYPC League and proved to be a good match for Alnwick’s U9s, on Sunday.

The hosts started brightly and it wasn’t long before they got their first goal, Marco Makenley broke with the ball, held off two defenders and slotted the ball into the net (1-0).

Both teams had chances, before Archie Smith was tripped in the box and was awarded a penalty. Smith stepped up to blast the ball into the net to go 2-0 up at half-time.

But Cobras knew the game was far from over.

A Wideopen cross was missed by the defender and slipped under the goalkeeper and into the net (2-1).

This got Comets back into the match, then a bad tackle in the area gave Wideopen a penalty which was put away to make it 2-2.

Both teams battled well to the final whistle and the game went into extra-time.

Neither team could break the deadlock and the tie went to penalties.

Both teams had three penalties each but still they couldn’t be separated, so it went into sudden death and Wideopen grabbed the winner. The sides played their hearts out, but there had to be a winner. Cobras were back to their best and with a bit of luck could have made it to the final.
