Lowick Ladies take full advantage

Lowick Ladies 5 Redcar Ladies 1

NERWFL Northern Division

With rivals Tynedale playing in the Women’s FA Cup, this victory saw Lowick open up a four-point lead at the top of the table.

The match followed a similar pattern to the away fixture last week with the visitors having the best of the early play and Laura Powell in the home goal having to be alert.

After about 15 minutes, Lowick began to settle and, although no clear-cut scoring opportunities were created, they did have the balance of the play.

The pattern of the match was Lowick dominating in midfield with Kirstie Tang, Jenna Kerr and Jenny Patterson all impressing, but Redcar defended doggedly and apart from long-range efforts from Becky Robinson and Michelle Stewart, chances were few and far between.

With five minutes to go before half-time, the breakthrough came when a pass from Steph Hay released Stewart to beat the off-side trap and force it home (1-0).

There now followed a passage of play which was quite unbelievable when Lowick scored a further three goals in the space of five minutes.

The first saw a Robinson cross deftly flicked into the net by Georgia Thompson, followed in quick succession by two goals from Stewart after good approach play from Kerr and Tang (half-time 4-0).

With 15 minutes to go, Redcar scored a consolation goal, but Lowick had the best of the closing moments. Stewart scored her 19th goal of the season, making her the league’s top-scorer with a fine strike from 20 yards.

Next week Lowick are away to Birtley Town.
