Leaders brought down by gritty Colliers performance

Shilbottle CW...3 Berwick Utd...2

North Northumberland League Division One

SHILBOTTLE just got the better of the current league leaders in this entertaining game at the Welfare Ground.

The Colliers opened brightly and almost took the lead when a good ball into the box by Richard Brown fizzed across goal without a final touch being applied.

However, they did open the scoring after 20 minutes when a long ball from Scott McMullen found Shaun Black out on the left and his fine cross was headed home by Alan Wallace from close range (1-0).

Berwick hit back five minutes before the break when Mitchell Simpson broke clear to finish well (1-1).

The scores were level at the interval but it was Berwick who began the second period on the front foot.

A good save from Josh Rutherford in the Shilbottle goal kept his team level before Berwick took the lead on the hour with a goal from Simon Hargreaves (1-2).

Within 10 minutes, the Colliers managed to retrieve the situation when fine interplay between Richard Brown and Alan Wallace saw Black race clear to fire past the Berwick keeper and draw his side level (2-2).

The Colliers were now in the ascendancy and another good run from Black put pressure on the Berwick goal, which resulted in Phil Grey forcing the ball home from close range to give his side the lead with 15 minutes to play (3-2).

It was not all plain sailing for the Colliers and it took a couple of fine saves from Rutherford just before the end to ensure that Shilbottle took all the points.
