Last-gasp drama sees Lowick share title

Blakelaw Utd...2 Lowick Utd...4

Northumberland County Women’s Football League

The final game of the 28 match league season was played midweek and was dubbed Title Tuesday as Lowick Utd battled Ashington for the league title.

Lowick went into the game knowing that only a win would keep them in with a shout of the title, with Ashington leading the way by two points.

Lowick were hoping that North Shields could do them a favour by snatching something against the leaders.

Lowick were up against a young Blakelaw team and the title-chasers took the lead after 16 minutes thanks to M Stewart.

On 31 minutes Blakelaw equalised through the dangerous Smith.

It looked like Lowick’s title dreams would be dashed when Blakelaw scored after the interval.

But Lowick raised their game and Darcy curled a superb shot straight into the top corner to make it 2-2.

Lowick pressed for the winner and took the lead thanks to a bullet header from Patterson.

Two minutes later, Darcy scored her second to put Lowick 4-2 ahead.

That’s the way it stayed and Lowick finished the game knowing they had done all they could to keep the title race going.

To their delight, North Shields drew 3-3 with Ashington, meaning that the title was shared as Lowick and Ashington had identical league records of 26 wins, one draw and one defeat.

It was a fitting end to a magnificent season for both sides, with Lowick celebrating their second league championship win in a row and Ashington doing the double as league and league cup winners.

The club thanked everyone who has supported them this season.
