THE Longhoughton Rangers U11s Girls won their latest league fixture by the odd goal in 13.
Rangers kicked off what turned out to be a thriller and went straight on the attack, with an early shot from Grisdale saved.
The Walbottle keeper kicked the ball upfield, found a midfielder who played it forward to her attacker. The Rangers defence was caught ball-watching and the attacker all alone shot past a helpless Lindley (0-1).
Rangers restarted and applied pressure on the defence, Brown finding B Whittaker, who prodded the ball goalwards, before the Walbottle defence could react. Barrett pounced on it, shot and scored the equalizer (1-1).
Walbottle got the second quarter under way and after Rangers keeper Lindley had saved a penalty, they moved up a gear, edging ahead (1-2). Rangers restarted and played it upfield only for Walbottle to intercept and score a third (1-3).
Rangers restarted again and played the ball forward to Grisdale. She found Brown, whose shot whistled past the keeper (2-3).
The quarter was not finished there, Walbottle attacked straight from the kick-off, past the defence, shot and scored (2-4). The referee blew for half-time.
Rangers started the third quarter by attacking from the off, B Whittaker finding Grisdale, whose shot was saved but only parried for Brown to react the quickest and strike the ball into the back of the net (3-4).
Walbottle again opened up a two-goal lead (3-5) before Rangers pulled one back. Grisdale blocked a goal-kick, played it to Barrett who burst the back of the net (4-5).
The Walbottle Girls came straight back, hit the ball forward, found their midfielder, who ran at the Rangers defence, passed to her attacker who shot past Lindley (4-6).
Longhoughton Rangers made some changes in formation for the last quarter.
Marshall went in goal and Lindley moved into defence.
The Walbottle keeper saved but spilled a Grisdale shot and Barrett, as quick as lightning, stuck out her foot and prodded the ball in (5-6).
Newby again brought the ball forward, found B Whittaker, who passed to Barrett and she shot. The ball flew into the top corner to draw level (6-6).
The final goal went Rangers’ way. Lindley passed forward, found Barrett who took the ball down the right. She crossed it in for Brown to meet it and strike it into the back of the net (7-6).
