Curtain comes up on the new season

Teams from north Northumberland open their account for the 2013/14 football season on Saturday.

Alnwick Town kick off in Northern League Division Two with a home match against West Allotment Celtic.

The clash will be the St James’ Park side’s 1,001st game in the Northern League .

The black ‘n’ whites will be hoping for a better campaign this time round, after finishing second-bottom last season.

Despite ending in the relegation places, Alnwick were granted a stay of execution in Division Two as Ryhope CW – who were runners-up – were relegated for failing to meet ground criteria. They went down with bottom team Horden CW.

Alnwick’s first away game of the season is on Wednesday evening, when they travel to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion.

On Saturday, September 7, Alnwick host Bradford-based Albion Sports in the first qualifying round of the prestigious FA Vase competition.

This weekend also marks the start of the 2013/14 Northern Alliance campaign.

Newly-promoted Wooler start life in Division One with an away match against Willington Quay Saints on Saturday.

The Glendale-based side then host Cullercoats on Wednesday evening.

In Division Two, Alnwick Town Reserves are at Newcastle Benfield Reserves on Saturday.

This will be followed by a home clash against Blyth Isabella on Wednesday.

Premier Division new-boys Wallington begin their season with a home match against Percy Main Amateurs.

The Division One champions then travel to Stocksfield on Wednesday night.

The new seasons of the Morpeth Sunday League and the North Northumberland League start shortly.
