Colliers snatch game littered with defensive errors

Longhoughton Rangers...4 Shilbottle CW...6

North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE just came out on top in this goal feast at Westfield Park, Longhoughton, on Saturday.

In a match strewn with defensive errors, Longhoughton took the lead after 10 minutes’ play.

The Colliers drew level after 20 minutes when Danny Lillico scored at the back post following a Richard Brown flick-on from a left-wing corner.

Within a couple of minutes, the Colliers found themselves in the lead when a good through-ball from Adam Gattens was lifted into the top corner of the net by Alan Wallace.

Shilbottle moved further clear on the half-hour when Richard Brown broke through to finish well.

The Colliers got a fourth before the break when an Andy Metcalf effort came back off the crossbar for Wallace to follow up and score.

Shilbottle led 4-1 at the interval and within five minutes of the restart, made it five when Wallace found himself clear through to finish well and complete his hat-trick.

The visitors appeared to go to sleep defensively after this and allowed Longhoughton to pull two goals back within a five-minute period to get back into the game.

After Phil Grey struck the crossbar and Richard Brown had an effort cleared off the line, Shilbottle substitute Kevin Elliott got a sixth to make the game safe.

There was, though, still time for Longhoughton to get a fourth just before the end to complete the scoring.
