Colliers grab late winner

Shilbottle CW...2 Embleton WR...1

North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE just came out on top courtesy of a late winner in this close encounter at the Welfare Ground.

Play was fairly even early on but the visitors opened the scoring after 15 minutes, the ball falling kindly for Mark Forrest to race clear and round the Shilbottle keeper to put Embleton in the lead. The Colliers came back strongly following this setback and should have drawn level when Shaun Black put a good chance wide of the target.

They then missed an even better opportunity, following good play by Richard Brown. Andy Metcalf managed to put the cross over the bar from all of two yards with the goal wide open.

Richard Brown then had another effort well-saved before the Colliers finally drew level five minutes before the break.

Good inter-play found Ronnie Warwick free in the box to shoot home from close range.

Play became scrappy following the restart but the Colliers appeared to have taken the lead on the hour-mark.

Shaun Black broke clear down the middle to shoot home only for the referee to give the goal offside despite the Embleton linesman waving play on.

It looked as though the game was destined for a one-all draw, only for Shilbottle to grab a winner two minutes from time.

A ball into the box saw substitute Alan Wallace collect well before thumping the ball in the top corner to snatch all the points for a fortunate home side.
