Colliers bow out of season with a whimper

Shilbottle CW...1 Rothbury FC...3

North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE completed their league fixtures with a pretty poor performance in this dull encounter at the Welfare Ground.

The Colliers opened brightly and took the lead within the first minute when Andy Metcalf struck a cracking drive from the edge of the box that found the net off the underside of the bar.

Within five minutes, Rothbury were level when slack defensive play allowed Craig Sutton to break clear and score with ease.

Play was fairly even until just before the break when a failed offside trap allowed Rothbury’s Ben Lamb to race clear and put his side in the lead at the interval.

Following the restart an effort from Richard Brown almost drew the Colliers level but it flew just wide. However, when George Scott grabbed a third goal for Rothbury after 55 minutes, the game was all but settled.

Late efforts from Brown, Conroy and Black for Shilbottle failed to reduce the deficit as Rothbury comfortably held on to take all the points.
