Rothbury FC...2 Shilbottle CW...4
North Northumberland League, Sanderson Cup, Quarter-Final
SHILBOTTLE progressed to the semi-finals of the Sanderson Cup with this well-earned victory at a ‘crusty’ Armstrong Park.
With the game on, despite the frosty conditions, it was the Colliers who had the better of the early exchanges.
They took the lead after 10 minutes’ play when a cracking 30-yard drive from Scott McMullen found the corner of the net. Rothbury replied by hitting a post before Phil Grey put a header just wide.
Shilbottle increased their advantage just before the break when the ball fell nicely just inside the box for Scott McMullen to slot home for his second goal.
The Colliers led by two goals at the interval and just about made the game safe when Alan Wallace headed against the post only to nod the rebound into an empty net. Rothbury pulled a goal back on 65 minutes, forcing the ball home from close range following a left-wing corner.
Shilbottle almost regained their three-goal advantage when James Jackson had a cracking drive blocked on the line but the game was made safe 15 minutes from time when Scott McMullen completed his hat-trick with smart finish from inside the box.
A late goal from Rothbury with almost the last kick of the game proved to be little more than a than a consolation for the home side.
