NFA Minor Cup, Round Three

SHILBOTTLE progressed to the last 16 of the NFA Minor Cup with this narrow victory over NNL colleagues Rothbury at a blustery Welfare ground.

The Colliers opened brightly and took the lead after only five minutes’ play when Shaun Black beat the Rothbury keeper to a 50/50 ball and rounded him to shoot into an empty net (1-0).

However, Rothbury hit back to level within five minutes when a free kick into the box was poorly defended and Scott Rennison forced the ball home for an equaliser (1-1).

Play became scrappy as both sides battled with the conditions and the interval arrived with the score still level.

The second half began with the Colliers on the front foot and they almost took the lead when a good run from Andy Metcalf saw his cross struck wide by Alan Wallace.

They finally made their pressure pay when a hand-ball in the box on 70 minutes saw them awarded a penalty, which Alan Wallace confidently struck home (2-1).

Shilbottle were now well on top but were unable to land the third goal that would have killed the game. A good effort from Shuan Black late on struck the bar as the Colliers comfortably held on to move into the next round.
