A hat-trick from Jon Colley inspired Alnwick Town to a 5-3 victory against Heaton Stannington in the first round of the Northumberland Senior Cup this evening.

Further goals from colleagues Tony Brown and Darren Riddell helped hosts Alnwick complete a fine win and progress to the next round.

The black ‘n’ whites got off to the worst possible start though when Jonathan Wright smashed in a powerful first-minute effort for visiting Heaton Stannington.

Alnwick levelled through Colley’s first of the night, which came shortly before the half-hour, but Heaton Stannington regained the lead immediately through Joseph Wear.

Colley grabbed his second minutes later to level the contest, before Tony Brown put Alnwick ahead, giving them a 3-2 lead at half time.

The home side never looked back. Colley grabbed his hat-trick from close range in the 54th minute and Darren Riddell made it five shortly after.

Ben Telford scored Heaton Stannington’s third with about 15 minutes to go, but Alnwick saw the game out.
