An Alnwick rugby league star scored the first try in England Youth Squad’s convincing victory over Wales on Saturday.

Jake Woods, 16, got his name on the scoresheet by touching down in the corner, as the nation ran out 46-18 winners.

His try came in the 12th minute of the U16 international, which was played at Dyffryn Pennar Park, Wales, to kick off the Mountain Ash Festival of Rugby League.

Jake is part of the North East Thunder Regional Academy and plays for Cramlington Rockets.

Before the match, Rockets U16s coach, Jordan Robinson, said: “I’m so proud of Jake getting this chance.

“He more than deserves it for all the hard work he has put in and it’s a great achievement for him and his family.”
