A missed opportunity

Shilbottle CW...1 Berwick Harrow...2

North Northumberland League, Division One

SHILBOTTLE paid a heavy price for poor finishing as they were just edged out of this tight encounter at the Welfare Ground.

The Harrow opened the scoring almost from the kick-off when poor defending allowed Mark Anderson to strike a cracking drive over the head of the Shilbottle keeper and into the roof of the net.

The Colliers came back strongly after going a goal behind and were unlucky not to get a penalty when Alan Wallace was brought down by the Harrow keeper.

Play became one-way traffic in Shilbottle’s favour.

Andy Metcalf twice found himself clean through on goal, only to strike wide of the target.

Richard Brown then found himself in a similar position, but shot over the bar.

He then struck a post from a tight angle.

Despite having the bulk of the play, the Colliers found themselves a goal down at the interval.

This pattern continued following the restart and Ronnie Warwick put a good chance over the bar.

The Colliers finally found an equaliser after 65 minutes when a good ball from Wallace put Richard Brown in the clear and he finished well.

However, within five minutes the Harrow were in front again, having rarely threatened Shilbottle’s goal.

A loose ball broke kindly for Robbie Skelly to lob the Shilbottle keeper to put his side in the lead for a second time.

The Colliers’ attempts to get back into the game grew ever more frantic as Harrow held on to win the match.
