On May Bank Holiday Monday, Rothbury Bowling Club held its annual Open Pairs Competition, which saw a full entry of 32 pairs from throughout Northumberland and the Borders of Scotland take part.

After a good day’s bowling in the round robin and quarter-final stages, the semi-finals, played over seven ends, turned out to be very closely-contested games.

The first semi-final was an all-Rothbury affair, with father and son Rob and Graham Donkin triumphing over George Heron and David Bolton by five shots to three.

The second semi-final saw Craig Martin and Alan Gilchrist of Gordon BC, Scotland, beat Brian Ord and Alan Joice of Alcan BC by eight shots to six.

The day was topped off by a marvellously-contested final going into the last end at six-all.

It wasn’t, however, to be Rothbury’s day, with Martin/Gilchrist pairing emerging winners over the Donkin pairing by seven shots to six.

The committee would like to thank the ladies for their sterling efforts in the catering department as, without them, these days would not be possible.
