Exciting cup opener

North Northumberland Junior Golf League Super Cup

The 2013 Junior Golf League got off to a fantastic start with the opening match of the Super Cup where last year’s league winners play last year’s knockout cup finalists.

The match between Linden Hall and Alnwick at Alnmouth (Foxton) was played in fair conditions over a testing course with very fast greens.

The first match went Alnwick’s way with Joe Henderson beating Lewis Cochrane but the next two matches went Linden’s way as Mike Moult beat Jack Friar on the last hole and Callum Lawn overcame Marc Friar.

It came down to the last match, with Alnwick needing to win to take it down the 19th and Connor Thompson beat Elliot Basford on the last hole with a stunning birdie.

This took the match down to the first hole with Joe Henderson playing Lewis Cochrane who played it very solidly putting in with a par four to win the cup.

The junior golf season had another good day to start off with the annual match against the men’s league.

A total of eight juniors played from around our clubs at Percy Wood which was in fantastic condition, bearing in mind the cold weather we have had, with greens in very good and fast condition.

The match saw the men battle to a win 4½ to 3½ with the last match between Duy Lam halving with Jonny Stevenson to give the men’s team the edge and bragging rights for the season.

This was followed by a fine meal in the clubhouse.

Many thanks went to Percy Wood for allowing the match to go ahead and this was followed by a fine meal afterwards in the clubhouse.

Results: Pete Cochrane beat Sean Miller; Ronnie Dixon lost to Lewis Cochrane; Mick Friar lost to Lucas Robinson; Pete Robinson beat Andrew Messenger; Steve Dillon lost to Luke Denny; Duy Lam halved with Jonny Stevenson; John Stevenson beat Marc Friar/Sam Thompson.
