EUROPE’S only female MMA referee will be laying down the law to some of the UK’s toughest fighters at Alnwick’s Cage Fight Night, writes Phil Doherty.
Danielle Curzon is the only female MMA referee to be fully trained by Marc Goddard, one of the UFC’s top officials.
Although she will be in charge of some of the toughest fighters from across the UK, as a former bodyguard to the stars, that won’t faze Danielle.
Darren Currah, Cage Fight Night organiser, said: “We are really pleased to have Danielle as the referee for the event.
“Not only is she the only fully trained female MMA ref in Europe, she is also a top kickboxing referee with one of the world’s largest kickboxing organisations and was also trained by referee legend Steve Faulkner, who sadly recently passed away.
“She has a reputation as being a tough but fair referee so she won’t put up with any nonsense from the fighters, in fact most fighters are quite in awe of Danielle and not a little scared of her.”
She will be refereeing at Cage Fight Night’s premier Battleground show being held at Duchess of Northumberland’s The Alnwick Gardens, Alnwick, Northumberland, on October 21.
Tickets are now on sale and are available by phoning 0191 4146375 or at Cameleon store, Market Place, Alnwick. They cost £20 for standard, £30 for small table of five VIP, £40 for single cageside, and £400 for VIP cageside table of ten. Sponsorship deals are available on request.
The event will be streamed live on the new Combat Sports Live TV and on Martial News’ Fight Sports Live TV channels.
DFM’s Cage Fight Night is one of the top shows in the region and will be featuring mixed martial arts, K-1 and also kickboxing. It is sponsored by the UK’s only online newspaper dedicated to combat sports Martial News.
Danielle is not only a MMA and kickboxing referee, she runs a door security company, has body-guarded stars such as Jodie Kidd and Emma Watson. She is also a lingerie model.
She is also trained in Muay Thai boxing, American, British and Freestyle kickboxing and MMA.
She will be joined by three of the UK’s top cage fighting judges from Neil Hall’s Allegiance MMA organisation. These judges are also trained by Marc Goddard.
Danielle said: “I suppose I’m a bit unique because what I do is in such a male-dominated industry.
“Although I love kickboxing, my passion is the cage. It was great that I had Steve Faulkner teaching me how to referee. He gave me so much confidence. He was my friend and my mentor and I owe him everything.
“I also attended Marc Goddard’s MMA referee and judge’s course, which was a really brilliant seminar. Marc’s knowledge is second to none and I’m really lucky to have had such a teacher.
“It’s different from getting into the ring or cage as a referee to being a fighter. But having been a fighter myself I understand what is going through their minds.
“My family are not impressed with my choice, however. I used to do horse dressage and I think they were happier with that or even when I was a celebrity bodyguard looking after Emma Watson from Harry Potter.
“I was her minder when she was 16 years old and she was going through her GCSEs.
“I had to look after her when she went to Alton Towers and during some of the filming for the Harry Potter films. Emma is a really lovely girl, she really is nice.
“I also looked after Jodie Kidd when she attended Elton John’s summer party and I worked with Elijah Woods during the Edinburgh Film Festival.
“My ambition is to become the first British UFC female referee. There is one girl who refs for them in the USA but I want to be the first British female ref for the organisation.”
