Ella stars for Harriers in cross country run at South Shields

On Saturday (November19) there were a number of Alnwick Harriers in cross country action at Temple Park, South Shields.

Local club South Shields Harriers hosted the Sherman Cup and Davison Shield cross country events for Juniors and Seniors. Though there may not have been as many Harriers taking part as in the Harrier League races there were some excellent performances.

Star of the day was undoubtedly Ella Brown. In the Womens race Ella was a brilliant sixth finisher of almost 300 competitors, a performance which saw her finish as first Veteran, a stunning performance.

Not far behind was Jo Gascoigne-Owens in 13th, whilst 20th home was Rachelle Falloon, once again showing what a class act she is. Karen Kelly was 60th finisher and along with Ella and Jo helped Alnwick to finish second Veteran team out of the 24 clubs represented. They actually finished joint top with Tyne Bridge Harriers, but owing to some dubious count-back rule finished second!

For the Senior Men top man was a brand new Harrier borrowing a vest for debut, David Milne. Of the 379 finishers on the 5.75 mile course David was 26th home, an impressive debut. Steve Carragher was 50th, whilst Graham Simpson was 74th. Along with Steve, Jon Duffy and Mark Doctor helped the club finish 17th Veteran team of the 30 participating clubs.

Over 20 Juniors turned out for the club spread across the various age groups. Max Murray John was the club’s highest placed runner managing to finish fourth in the 1k Under 11s Boys race.

In the Girls Under 11 race Sophie Burn was first home for Alnwick, with Chloe Givens and Tess Hindmarsh finishing together 20 seconds behind.

Gus Owen led home the Boys Under 13s team with a good time of 13.36 for the 3k course, whilst Ellie Henderson was first counter for the Girls Under 13s team, with Millie Breese just behind her.

The Under 15s Boys team had their strongest team of the season with Ollie Telfer their first counter in 12.26, whilst Callie Henderson was once again the Girls Under 15s sole representative and ran well as ever to finish 9th overall. Sophie Enser was the clubs only runner in the Girls Under 17/20 race but finished well in a very strong field.
