Difficult day for batsmen

Johnnie Johnson Housing Alnwick & District League round-up (Saturday, June 2)

Runs were at a premium in Saturday’s fixtures with bowlers calling the shots in most matches.

This was certainly the case at Howick where Wooler’s Michael McLean (5-8) and Andrew Aitchison (3-7) skittled the home side for just 30 in a nine-wicket romp.

Rock suffered a similar fate at Mitford after being dismissed for 55 with Kieran Mole (5-2) and Kieran Little (4-7) doing the damage. Mitford knocked off the required runs for the loss of two wickets, the free-scoring Matty Ellinor bagging 40 of them.

It was a different story at Berwick where the home side racked up 176 with Mark Woodcock (44) and Martin Inglis (39) the top scorers. In reply, the visitors crawled to 67-8 in their 45 overs.

Best score of the day was Alnmouth and Lesbury Seconds’ 202-6 against Warenford at The Wicket, Joe Dilnot (59), Andrew McDonnell (49) and Alistair Batey (29) the main contributors. Tom Potts claimed 3-9.

That the visitors, in reply, eventually reached 140-9 in their 45 overs was due in no small measure to an unbeaten 45 by Paul Smith. Batting at number 10, he shared a ninth-wicket stand of 80 with Ian Patterson after Warenford had slumped to 60-8.

The home side included seven players aged between 14 and 17 with 17-year-old McDonnell claiming five wickets for 17 runs to round off a memorable all-round performance.

The closest match of the day was at Tillside where Embleton fell just two runs short of the home side’s total of 117-9, Barrie Dunn top-scoring with 45. Kevin Logan’s 5-21 proved a match-winning performance.

With the leading three teams (Mitford, Alnmouth and Lesbury 2nds and Wooler) all winning there was little change at the top of the table.
