Derby start to championship defence

CHAMPIONS Warkworth begin the defence of their Premier Division title with a derby match against Alnmouth & Lesbury in the Northumberland Cricket League.

The encounter is the curtain-raiser to both sides’ 2011 Premier Division campaign and is sure to be keenly-contested.

Warkworth, who won the league last year, travel to Alnmouth & Lesbury for the game, which starts at 1pm this Saturday.

Newly-promoted Tillside also start their Premier Division campaign on Saturday.

The north Northumberland side won Division One last season and begin their exploits in the League’s top tier with a trip to Bates Cottages, starting at 1pm.

The second XIs from Stobswood Welfare and Ulgham Village start their Division B2 season on Saturday with 1.30pm home contests against Civil Service and Monkseaton respectively.

Other teams start their campaigns on Saturday, April 30, including the first XIs from Stobswood Welfare and Ulgham Village, who are both in Division One.

Alnwick begin their Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League season on Saturday.

The first team’s Division A2 curtain-raiser sees them host Ponteland while the second string travel to Ponteland for their Division B2 opener. Both matches start at 1.30pm.

The Alnwick and District Cricket League starts on Saturday, April 30.

l Alnmouth & Lesbury were due to start their 2011 Midweek Division season last night against Ashington Rugby in the Northumberland Cricket League.

Warkworth’s midweek XI kick-off their season in the competition on Wednesday at Cramlington at 6pm. Alnmouth are not in action.
