Derby-day joy for Alnwick

Alnwick Ladies I 4 Morpeth Ladies I 0

North East Division Two

Alnwick Ladies’ first team chalked up another victory on Saturday, with a satisfying scoreline against their neighbours.

They defeated Morpeth 4-0 to follow their 8-0 hammering of Sunderland last week – a return of 12 goals in two games.

The strikes came from four different sources – Straker, Brown, Horn and Pettifer.

Alnwick II 3 Newcastle III 2

This Plate competition encounter saw the Alnwick ladies’ twos meet Newcastle’s third team on a blustery morning at Coach Lane.

Both teams started well with equal possession, but Newcastle sneaked ahead 1-0 midway through the first half.

Alnwick responded well with strong play in the midfield from Young, Brown and Gray and persistence from Lincoln in the D earned them a short corner.

The hit-out came from Gray and a strong strike from Payne went straight past the keeper to level the score (1-1).

In the second half, Newcastle again broke free to go 2-1 ahead, but anything they could do, Alnwick could do too, pushing up play and being rewarded with another short-corner chance. This time, the strike came in from the top of the D to the left-post for Brown to pop in (2-2).

In the last 15 minutes, the Alnwick defence was tested with numerous attacks from Newcastle, but a team effort from Reed, Fairbairn, Frew and Goddard as well as keeper Taylor, kept the score level to the final whistle, forcing extra-time.

The hunt for the golden goal was on and an Alnwick side-line saw Frew fire straight towards the D, where Broom was poised and ready to slip it in to finish the game.
