A FORMER Olympic medallist has launched this year’s Salomon Kielder Marathon.

Steve Cram MBE yesterday unveiled plans for the Sunday, October 7, challenge, which returns for the third year.

The marathon, hosted by Northumbrian Water and jointly organised by DS Media & Events, will once again follow an almost entirely off-road course around Kielder Water.

Up to 3,000 runners are expected to take part in the event, which has sold out the previous two years.

Event director Cram said: “As we move into an Olympic year, any sporting event taking place in 2012 has an extra element of relevance. We urge everyone to secure their place as soon as possible and make the Salomon Kielder Marathon their 2012 challenge.”

Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with no ballot, and entry is £35. Runners who deferred their place last year will be guaranteed a place for 2012 at the standard price of entry.

Entries are also open for the Kielder 10k, taking place on Saturday, October 6, while other events over the marathon weekend will be launched later this year. To book a marathon or 10k place, visit www.kieldermara thon.com
