MITFORD Park witnessed a real run fest on Saturday in the Johnnie Johnson Housing Alnwick and District Cricket League as records tumbled in the home side’s 139-run victory over Berwick.
The home total of 309 for three wickets was in itself a club record score as was the second wicket partnership between Terry Dunn and Matthew Ellinor.
Dunn’s innings of 144 was also a personal best and included no fewer than 22 fours and two sixes.
The former Embleton player gave just three chances, two of them quite difficult, before he was eventually stumped by Kevin Golightly off the bowling of Steve Dunn.
He was well supported by Ellinor, who hit 10 fours in an undefeated 82, and Scott Lawson with 51.
To Berwick’s credit, they gave it a go, despite facing a mammoth target, and were 170 all out after 31.4 overs, Glen Bird top-scoring with 51.
Alnmouth and Lesbury succumbed to a nine-wicket home defeat to champions Warenford following an excellent partnership between Kevin and Brian Thompson who scored 80 and 51 respectively in a total of 159-1 off only 28 overs.
A fine all-round performance from Andrew Aitchison was the highlight of Wooler’s seven-wicket victory over Tillside.
He claimed 6-18 as the home side ground out a score of 116 off 44 overs and followed up with an undefeated 35 in Wooler’s reply of 117-3 off 37.4 overs.
Wooler’s win took them to the top of the table but only by a solitary point from Warenford.
Embleton had only nine players for their home fixture against neighbours Howick who experienced a similar player shortage a fortnight earlier which led to them having to forfeit the match.
The depleted home side lost by a mere six runs in a low-scoring affair and left them pondering what might have been with a full side.
In the day’s other match, Rock squeezed out a two-wicket victory over Warkworth at the Castle Field, thanks mainly to an innings of 71 by R Williams.
