Batting lapses prove costly for Alnwick

Alnwick II (85 all out) v Seaton Burn II (113-7)

Wellstream Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division B2

After a consistent bowling performance, and some dedicated fielding, Alnwick twos were unable to capitalise, as several batting lapses saw them fall 28-runs shy of Seaton Burn’s 113.

Alnwick skipper Andrew Stewart elected to field and consistent bowling from Chris Woods and Andrew Wright contained Burn.

Woods bowled Kyle and had Dixon caught by Harry Lobb, before Andrew Barker dismissed Duruthu, leaving Burn 38-3.

Burn looked to rally, but Stewart claimed three crucial wickets and Alnwick were set 114 to claim their second victory of the season.

The hosts needed to show patience chasing a modest target, but got off to an awful start when experienced openers Allen Thompson and Stewart departed early on, leaving Alnwick 0-2.

Woods and Laurence Reeves steadied the ship with a stand of 39, but when the former dragged on, Alnwick needed to rebuild again.

Reeves continued to bat sensibly, but once he skied the ball for a well-compiled 32, Alnwick were in the mire.

58-4 became 70-7 as Lobb, Barker and Tom Lakey fell in quick succession.

Ollie Holst smashed two boundaries to offer a glimmer of hope, but once he departed for 11, the innings swiftly ended with Alnwick 28 short.
