On a bitterly cold day at Blagdon, Bamburgh opened their 2013 campaign with a comprehensive 97-run defeat against a strong Blagdon side with a mixture of youth and experience on Sunday.

Asked to bat first, Blagdon got off to a good start against a depleted Bamburgh bowling attack and openers Marr and Meadows made 49 before Marr was bowled by Tom Lakey for 11 in the ninth over with the total on 49.

Blagdon continued with their attacking game making runs at a good rate and finished their innings on 181-4 off their 30 overs.

Top scorer was opener Andy Meadows who made an impressive 77 off only 59 balls with useful contributions from Simon Eyres (42no) and Russell Hughes (26no).

The wicket-takers for Bamburgh were Lakey (1-17) Lawrence Reeves (1-32) and spinner Ryan Kelly (2-37).

When Bamburgh batted, they made a good start in the run chase and were 49 for one in the 12th over until the wheels came off and they lost their next nine wickets for only 35 runs in 13 overs, with only four players making double figures.

Richard Alsept (15), Tom Lakey (10), Lawrence Reeves (20) and Neil McDonald (11) were the principle scorers.

The main destroyer was Tom Clough, who took 3-7 off his six overs.

Bamburgh are hoping to do better when they entertain Ponteland at the Castle Field on Sunday.
